Lt. Rob Garrett began his career with the Columbus PD in 1978 after serving in the United States Air Force from 1974 to 1977.

Lt. Garrett has served in all aspects of police service including patrol, investigations, communications, and training. He is currently assigned to Columbus PD’s Office of Professional Standards where he is responsible for planning and research, Accreditation, staff inspections, and special projects. Lt. Garrett serves as his agency’s primary liaison for protective details including the United States Secret Service, United States Capitol Police, and visiting dignitaries. He has successfully led his agency through three national re-accreditation on-sites.

Lt. Garrett has also served as the Chairman of the Georgia Police Accreditation Coalition and Vice Chairman of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police State Certification Committee.  He assisted in the development of the State Certification Committee. He assisted in the development of the
State Certification Program and continues to serve on the working committee that establishes the standards to meet State Certification.  Lt. Garrett serves as a guest instructor for the Chief Executive Training program sponsored by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

He holds a Master of Science in Personnel Management, Master of Criminal Justice Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Troy State University.  In 2005, Lt. Garrett obtained a certificate in Local Government Management from the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government.

In his spare time, Rob serves as a contributing editor to Harris Publications writing on firearms and law enforcement related topics.  He has had over 100 articles published over the past twenty-one years.  His work can be found in Combat Handguns, Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, and other Harris magazines.
